What joint reconstruction is
It is an area of orthopedics dedicated to rebuilding joints with extensive injuries, where simple fracture fixation or a conventional replacement is not enough. The procedure may combine osteosynthesis (fixation with plates and screws), bone grafts, special implants and ligament repair.
Situations in which it is indicated
- complex fractures involving the joint, such as those of the acetabulum, tibial plateau and knee;
- fracture sequelae, with deformity or post-traumatic osteoarthritis;
- bone loss around implants or the knee;
- revision of hip and knee replacements;
- failures of previous surgeries.
How planning works
Reconstruction surgeries require meticulous planning: X-rays, CT scans and sometimes three-dimensional models. The surgeon defines the order of steps, the implants and alternatives during surgery. An experienced team, adequate hospital structure and organized rehabilitation make a difference.
Dr. Daniel Ramallo's training
Dr. Daniel Ramallo completed sub-specialty training in orthopedic trauma surgery and complex joint reconstruction at INTO and a fellowship in joint reconstruction at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle (USA), one of the leading trauma centers in the United States. He also takes part in round tables on hip and acetabular fractures at national congresses.
