Seek an evaluation if pain lasts more than a few weeks, started after a fall or trauma, comes with swelling, deformity, locking or painful clicking, or interferes with sleep, work or sports. Severe pain after trauma should be assessed as soon as possible.
In Brazil the specialty is a single one: Orthopedics and Traumatology. The orthopedist treats diseases and injuries of bones, joints, muscles, tendons and ligaments, and traumatology focuses on injuries caused by trauma, such as fractures.
